Plot Summary

Ghost Hunt follows the paranormal research office Shibuya Psychic Research (SPR) as its members take on the investigation of spiritual phenomena throughout Japan. SPR’s members include: Taniyama Mai, a high-schooler with latent psychic abilities and the main female protagonist; Shibuya Kazuya (aka Naru), the handsome and brilliant, yet proud, teenage director of Shibuya Psychic Research; and Lin Koujo, Naru’s reticent right-hand man. Several other individuals aid them in their investigations, some with psychic powers and some without.

Franchise Overview

Novels

Ghost Hunt, originally titled The Akuryō Series (悪霊シリーズ; The Evil Spirits Series) is a series of light novels written by Ono Fuyumi (小野不由美). They were originally published in eight volumes between 1989 – 1992 by Kodansha. A sequel novel entitled Akumu no Sumu Ie (悪夢の棲む家; The House in Which Nightmares Dwell) was later published in two parts in 1994 by Kodansha. The series was later retitled Ghost Hunt (ゴーストハント) and a series of rewritten novels featuring changes to the original series were released between 2010 - 2011 in seven volumes. This series was published by Media Factory. The rewrite editions feature art by Inada Shiho (いなだ詩穂), the author/artist of the Ghost Hunt manga.

Short Stories

Ono Fuyumi wrote several short stories that offered a deeper look into the backstories of the series' main characters. These were published throughout the early nineties as dōjinshi, i.e. self-published works, and hard-copies are not readily available.

Radio Drama

The Akuryō Series was adapted into a radio drama in 1997.

Manga

In 1998, Inada Shiho began adapting The Akuryō Series into a manga entitled The Ghosthunt. The manga follows the original story almost exactly with some minor differences and includes three side stories that were not featured in the novels. It originally began serialization in Amie magazine, but then later moved to Nakayoshi. It was collected and published in twelve volumes by Kodansha. The final volume of the first manga was published in 2010. In 2012, Inada Shiho began adapting the Akumu no Sumu Ie novels into a second Ghost Hunt manga. It began serialization in Aria magazine in November 2012 and was then published in three volumes between 2013 - 2016 by Kodansha.

Anime

An anime adaptation of the manga entitled Ghost Hunt was created by J.C.Staff and premiered on October 3, 2006 in Japan on TV Tokyo where it ran for twenty-five episodes until its conclusion. The anime is licensed for English release on Region 1 DVD by Funimation Entertainment, which also uses the name Ghost Hunt.
